The Great AGI Debate Is Over (For Now)
The discourse surrounding Artificial General Intelligence has become a remarkably binary affair. For the past few years, we’ve been presented with two potential futures, each painted in the most extreme colors imaginable. In one corner, we have the techno-optimists promising a god-tier intelligence that solves disease, climate change, and scarcity. In the other, we have the prophets of doom, sketching out a detailed, almost gleeful, roadmap to an extinction-level event. The market for narratives has been cornered by utopia and apocalypse.
But a series of quiet, data-driven tremors throughout 2025 suggests this binary is collapsing. The speculative fever dream of imminent, world-altering AGI is breaking, replaced by a much more sober, and frankly, more interesting reality. The conversation is undergoing a fundamental recalibration, shifting from philosophical terror to economic pragmatism. The data is telling us that the most pressing question isn't whether a superintelligence will kill us, but whether the current path can even produce one.
The Apocalyptic Premium
For a while, the dominant narrative was risk. Not just business risk, but existential risk. The idea that creating an intelligence on par with—or superior to—our own was akin to building our own replacement. It's a compelling story, and it has commanded a significant premium in terms of attention and capital. Venture funds have been raised and labs have been founded on the premise of either winning this race or building the "safe" version that won't turn on its creators.
This is the part of the analysis that I find genuinely puzzling. We’ve spent an inordinate amount of time modeling the effects of a hypothetical ASI without rigorously modeling its probability. It’s like designing a global defense system for a dragon attack. The planning might be meticulous, but it’s predicated on an entity whose existence is purely theoretical. What is the quantifiable probability of an AI-driven extinction? And more importantly, does focusing on this low-probability, high-impact event blind us to the more immediate, measurable trends taking shape right now?
A Correction in the Data
That brings us to the second half of 2025, a period that, in my view, will be seen as a crucial inflection point. The abstract, philosophical debate about `what is AGI in AI` was suddenly interrupted by a cascade of hard data points. And the data was not bullish.

First, the research papers. In June, an Apple paper on reasoning confirmed that even the most advanced models still fail at "distribution shift"—the Achilles' heel of neural networks where an AI trained on one data set can't reliably generalize to another. Then came the product releases. OpenAI's highly anticipated GPT-5, which arrived in August, was an impressive iteration, but it fell demonstrably short of the AGI hype that preceded it. It was a powerful tool, not a new form of consciousness.
Then the experts began to hedge. In September, Turing Award winner Rich Sutton, a pillar of the reinforcement learning community, publicly acknowledged the validity of critiques against the large language model (LLM) path to AGI. In October, Andrej Karpathy, a highly respected voice in the field (formerly of OpenAI and Tesla), stated that AI agents are "not anywhere close" and pegged AGI as being a decade away. That's a significant revision from the breathless "AGI by 2027" predictions that were common just a year prior.
This isn’t just anecdotal sentiment. This is a market correction in expectations, driven by observable results. The core assumption—that scaling current LLM architecture would inevitably lead to general intelligence—is now under serious scrutiny. The industry appears to be caught in what Replit CEO Amjad Masad calls a "local maximum trap." The current models are so economically valuable for specific, verifiable tasks that the incentive to pursue a riskier, more fundamental breakthrough is diminishing. The `AGI company` of tomorrow might look less like a moonshot factory and more like a hyper-efficient automation consultancy. We are optimizing for the immediate `AGI income`—the revenue from "functional AGI"—rather than investing in the foundational science needed for true AGI.
The whole situation is like a company reporting record quarterly earnings while its R&D division quietly shelves its most ambitious long-term project. The company's `adjusted gross income` looks fantastic, but its capacity for future innovation has been compromised. The tech industry's "earnings" from functional AI are soaring, but its net progress toward the stated goal of AGI appears to be stalling.
A Recalibration of Risk
So, where does this leave us? The evidence suggests the immediate existential threat isn't a rogue superintelligence. The more tangible risk is the misallocation of a historic amount of capital and talent based on a narrative that is rapidly diverging from the data. We've been pricing in a science-fiction scenario when we should have been analyzing a classic technology adoption cycle.
The conversation needs to evolve. The focus must shift from preventing a hypothetical apocalypse to navigating a real-world technological plateau. The critical questions are now economic and strategic: Are we in an AI bubble? How long can the "functional AGI" paradigm drive growth before returns diminish? And what alternative architectures are being neglected while all the capital flows toward scaling LLMs?
The risk of being wiped out by an ASI is, for the moment, a speculative variable. The risk of wasting a decade and trillions of dollars chasing a dead end is becoming a measurable probability. It’s time to adjust our models accordingly.
